Nosy Nigerians

I was told growing up that it takes a community to raise a child. I've seen this to be true growing up. There were times that an unknown person would scold me when I got caught slipping in public, and sometimes I would be with my mother. There were also times an unknown person would pay my bus fare because I was a child in a school uniform. I've been at the receiving end of acts of kindness, acts of correction, and the rest. I've seen passengers on a bus speak up when the bus conductor was rude to an elder.

We have witnessed a series of protests in October 2020. The Nigerian youths are asking for a right to live, a fundamental human right that no one should have to beg for.

We have protested against police brutality, and the world is starting to listen. However, what we do when we are not protesting is very important.

We need to continue to raise awareness and educate those who see no need for protests. We need to utilize our social media platforms to engage in conversations on creating solutions to end police brutality. Most importantly, we need to speak up.

È śòrò śòké

It is essential not to be quiet when you see unjust situations. Don't obstruct law enforcement officials from doing their jobs but don't sit by and watch when they abuse their power. Remember, there is power in numbers, and it takes a community. We bond and stand united when it is time for the World Cup or when it is time to defend Jollof rice. It is time to keep the same energy when talking about issues affecting our nation; bad governance, police brutality, corruption, and many more.

Today, the victim could be a stranger on the internet. Tomorrow, it could be a friend, family, or even you. It's time to be nosy when injustice knocks on the front door. These are my two cents and the Nosy Nigerian in me.

I believe we do need to stand up for what’s right in the Nigerian community and keep the strong values that were passed down from our fore-fathers
