SEXUAL HARASSMENT

The Beginning

Different Countries have different societal challenges which we all want to change, but we are Nigerians. We will start by addressing the problems we face in our country. One of which is Sexual Harassment. I remember my mother waiting at the bus stop whenever I had to come home late. Sadly, we live in a society where it is not safe for people to move around, even during the day.

The Issue

Sexual harassment is a major problem different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the country are fighting against; however, it does not seem like changes are being made. People who go to a market are still being groped while officers of the law harass arrested suspects. We need a policy change, but first, here's what a concerned youth has to say:

"Sexual harassment has a direct effect on young people on different levels, which is the reason why young people should be at the forefront in fighting against rape and social violence in our society." – Ahaneku Ekene.

The Mistakes

This menace's consequences can be devastating, ranging from loss of self-confidence to unplanned pregnancies in extreme cases. It beats me how society can shun a problem yet refuse to talk about it.

How do you send serial rapists to jail, release them after a while and expect all to be well? Going to jail does not perform miracles or transform a person every time. In some cases, people have been transformed after being released, but how do you know serial rapists are changed people?

A Proposed Solution

During an Interview with Ahaneku Ekene, he said: "Serving jail terms should not just be for deterrent purposes … Psychotherapy can help reform rapists."

Psychotherapy deals with treatments for mental and emotional challenges. Imagine this: What if we check the mental state of people guilty of sexual harassment in some instances? Then offer psychotherapy to those who need it while serving their sentence. That way, we can be sure changed people are being released into society. Thereby making the community better.
